13 People Shot In University Village This Year After Saturday Shooting

UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — A 25-year-old man was in serious condition after he was shot in University Village Saturday night. 

At 10:40 p.m. Saturday, the man was standing on the street in the 1000 block of West 14th Street near South Morgan Street when he heard shots and felt pain, Chicago Police said. 

The man was shot in his right side and was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. 

The shooting occurred less than a block away from the UIC Police station located at 943 W. Maxwell St. and near Barbara Jean Wright Courts, 1354 S. Morgan St. 

Seventh shooting this year 

The Saturday night shooting was the seventh shooting reported where someone was killed or injured in a half-square mile area bound by West Roosevelt Road, South Morgan Street, West 14th Street and South Throop Street this year.

The area includes Fosco Park, the Maxwell Street corridor, Barbara Jean Wright Courts and the Near West District Police station. 

• At 6 p.m. Jan. 26, 62-year-old Vietnam veteran Robert Howard Jr. was shot in the head in the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street and pronounced dead at the scene. 

Officers were called to the block and discovered Howard unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. 

Charneise Silas, 45, of the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street, was charged with one count of felony aggravated battery in connection with Howard's death. She was arrested after being identified as "one of the offenders" who participated in the shooting death, police said. 

• At 4 a.m. May 7, a 25-year-old man was wounded in the 1300 block of West Roosevelt Road. The man was inside a car when someone in another car fired shots at him. The man was hit twice in his arm and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. 

• At 3:40 a.m. June 18, one man was killed and two others were wounded in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street. The man, later identified as 24-year-old Eric D. Knox of the 1300 block of North Keeler Avenue, was shot in his back and head and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A 29-year-old man was shot multiple times in his sides, hand and forearm. A 30-year-old man was shot in his hand. 

• At 10:50 p.m. July 11, three men were shot in the 1300 block of South Blue Island Avenue. The men, ages 20 to 24, were sitting in a parked car when a group of men walked up and shot at them. 

• At 2:20 a.m. Aug. 7, one man was killed and a woman wounded in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street. The man and woman were standing at a "large gathering in the street" about a block from the Near West District Police station when shots rang out and they were struck. 

The man, later identified as 43-year-old Everick Coleman, of the 2400 block of West Madison Street, was pronounced dead on the scene after being shot in his head and chest. The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds in her left arm and back. 

• At 4:01 a.m. Aug. 21, a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were shot in the 1200 block of West Washburne Avenue. The pair was standing on the block when someone shot at them from the back seat of a passing car.
