NEAR WEST SIDE — A 43-year-old man was killed and a 40-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting on the Near West Side early Sunday morning, police said.

At 2:20 a.m., the man and woman were standing at a "large gathering in the street" in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, about a block from the Near West District Police station, when shots rang out and they were struck, according to a police incident report.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene after being shot in his head and chest, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Everick Coleman, of the 2400 block of West Madison Street.

The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds in her left arm and back, police said. Police could not provide her condition but said she was "stable."

No one is in custody, police said.
