CHICAGO — Shootings throughout the weekend have killed eight people and wounded at least 49 others since Friday morning, according to police.

Among the victims is a 14-year-old boy who was shot dead and an 8-year-old girl who was injured and hospitalized, police said.

The girl was shot along with a 40-year-old woman Sunday afternoon in Austin, police said. The 14-year-old boy was shot early Sunday morning but later died of his injuries at an area hospital, according to police.

Calling it "totally unacceptable," Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday blamed the shootings on gangs, saying, "Literally, these are gangbangers shooting at each other and affecting the lives of children."

Emanuel repeated calls for stronger sentences against repeat gun-law offenders as a way of stemming the gang shootings.

"There's not a weekend that goes by you don't have repeat offenders — 15, 17, 25, 30 arrests on their record, many of them multiple for gun offenses — who are back in the streets creating gun violence," he said.

Emanuel said a bill sponsored by state Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) on repeat offenders was making headway during the current summer recess in the General Assembly, and "my goal is when they get back that this be a priority."
