PILSEN — For carpenter Tim Dashnaw, doing one favor resulted in 40 feet of history.
About 15 years ago, Dashnaw — known as "Tim Wood" to his friends — did a favor for his buddy at the Illinois Department of Transportation. In exchange, the friend gave him a 40-foot-long antique trolley roll left over from the days when Chicagoans traveled by a different kind of rail.
While the city's trolleys were phased out by the late 1950s, Dashnaw held tight to his paper rolls.
Several years ago, he cut the sections into 2-foot-by-4-foot pieces and made custom frames to display them. Five of those pieces now hang at Cafe Jumping Bean, 1439 W. 18th St., where interested parties can marvel at the history, or — for $400 a pop — take a piece of that history home.
"I've got a lot more on the roll. Some of 'em aren't that interesting, like 'Pulaski, Pulaski, Pulaski,' you know? But there's plenty of good sections left," Dashnaw said laughing.
The trolley art will be up through April 10.
