Man Charged With Impersonating Officer, Breaking Into Lincoln Park Home

LINCOLN PARK — A suburban man has been charged with breaking into a Lincoln Park home and impersonating a police officer.

The man began banging on the back door of a home in the 2600 block of North Mildred Avenue early Saturday morning and claimed he was a police officer, according to an email from Ald. Michele Smith (43rd).

The 23-year-old man demanded he be let in before forcing himself into the residence, where he grappled with the 41-year-old homeowner about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Both the homeowner and an upstairs neighbor both called 911 when the man began banging on the door, and police arrived while the attack was crime was in progress, according to authorities.

Police arrested Joseph Benson of Indian Head Park, who was later charged with three counts of home invasion and one count of impersonating an officer.

The offender appeared to be highly intoxicated when he was arrested, according to Smith's email.

The homeowner was not hurt.

Benson is being held on $150,000 bail.
