"It was shocking how fast the fire went from the garbage can to the back of the house," a witness said.

"I just heard a big boom sound, and then just a huge screech and everyone screaming," one witness said.

Authorities said the fire started in one house and spread to another.

One car rear-ended another Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Two people were taken from the fire in the 5800 block of West Roscoe Street to a nearby hospital.

Firefighter and paramedic Sean Sloe, an Uptown resident, died in a motorcycle crash downstate Thursday.

Authorities said employees were in good condition after smelling fumes, which shut down the Blue Line.

The victim was taken in fair-to-serious condition from the Uptown blaze, the fire department said.

More than 10 emergency vehicles were called to the scene of a massive fire.

Fire personnel responded to the scene but found no one, a spokesman said.
