5 People Killed, 11 Wounded in Shootings Within Less Than 12 Hours Monday

CHICAGO — Five people were killed and 11 others wounded in shootings on Monday, police said.

The rash of shootings, which all took place in less than 11 hours, followed a lull on Sunday in which no one was reported wounded or killed in shootings.

Starting at 9:18 a.m., two men were shot while walking in Englewood, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. A 20-year-old man was shot in his abdomen and died, while the other victim, a teenager, was shot in his face and seriously wounded.

At 11:25 a.m., a 19-year-old was shot multiple times in Englewood and was pronounced dead, Pacheco said. The victim's shooters ran away down an alley.

At 4:40 p.m., a 39-year-old man was shot in his stomach in Pullman, Pacheco said. The man later died.

Just 20 minutes later, at 5 p.m., two teens were shot in Little Village, Pacheco said. A 19-year-old was shot in his head and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 16-year-old was shot in his back.

Finally, at 8:22 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in his back while driving in Washington Heights and crashed his car, Pacheco said. The man was taken to Roseland Hospital and pronounced dead.

In non-fatal shootings:

• Most recently, at 9:30 p.m., a 40-year-old man was shot in Englewood, Pacheco said. The man was in a parked car in the 5700 block of South Emerald Avenue when another car approached and someone inside fired shots, hitting the man in his leg.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in "stable" condition, Pacheco said.

• At 7:30 p.m., a 17-year-old was shot multiple times in Brainerd, Pacheco said. The teen was in the 8900 block of South Throop Street when he was shot in his chest, back, chin and left leg.

The teen was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, Pacheco said. Further details were not immediately available.

The teen is a documented gang member, police said.

• At 3:23 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in Roseland, Pacheco said. The man was in a car with two other people at 95th Street and La Salle Street when someone walked up and opened fire.

The man was shot in his head and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in serious condition, Pacheco said. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital.

• At 2:41 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in Pullman, Pacheco said. The man was in the 10600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when he was shot in his left foot. He took himself to Roseland Hospital.

No further details were immediately available.

• At 2 p.m., two men were shot in Belmont Cragin, Pacheco said. The two men were in a car at Diversey and Long avenues when another car drove up and someone inside fired at the men.

A 19-year-old man was shot in his shoulder and arm, and an 18-year-old was shot in his shoulder. The men took themselves to Community First Medical Center, where they were in "stable" condition, Pacheco said.

• At 1:15 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in West Town, Pacheco said. The man was in the 1400 block of North Fairfield Avenue when he was shot in his lower back. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition, Pacheco said.

The incident is possibly gang-related, police said.

• At 11:42 a.m., a 36-year-old man was shot in Back of the Yards, Pacheco said. The man was standing on the corner in the 900 block of West 50th Street when a black SUV drove up and someone inside fired shots.

The man was hit in his leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition, Pacheco said.

• At 10:20 a.m., a 56-year-old man was shot in Garfield Park, Pacheco said. The man was driving in the 500 block of South California Avenue when he heard shots and realized he'd been shot in his back.

The man drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in "stable" condition, Pacheco said.

The man is a documented gang member, police said.

No one is in custody in any of the shootings.
