SOUTHPORT CORRIDOR — Blessed with success and a growing number of vendors, the Low Line Market is expanding Thursday.

The farmers market, now in its third year under the Southport Brown Line "L" station, is stretching into a CTA-owned gravel lot under the auxiliary entrance of the station.

"This has become the farmers market for the Southport area. We've got a great group of vendors, and we're looking to expand and add even more" with music performances and other programming, said Dillon Goodson.

Since opening for its 2015 season in June, the market has grown from 10 vendors to 15. New this year are La Farine Bakery, PINT, Single Servings, Velvet Dessert and Yoberri Gourmet.

Joining the market Tuesday are nonprofit Pilot Light and the Global Garden Refugee Training Farm, an Albany Park lot where 100 refugee families from Bhutan and Burma grow fresh produce for loved ones and neighbors.

The season has been bountiful for the market regulars, with memorable moments like a neighbor dragging his piano down the street to play at the market one Thursday afternoon, Goodson said. He hopes to bring the pianist back, along with the Chicago Arts Orchestra, Mariachi Fuego and fiddler Robert McLeod.

As the new director of the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce's SSA 27 program, Goodson helps operate the market, which is sponsored by Whole Foods and L3 Capital. The Low Line Market runs Thursday evenings through Oct. 8 from 3-8 p.m., with the end time moving to 7 p.m. beginning Sept. 10.
