One Dead, At Least 10 Others Wounded in Shootings Overnight

CHICAGO — Chicago saw a rash of overnight shootings, including at least one fatality, after an already deadly start to the weekend.

The man who died was found around 10:10 p.m. Friday in Auburn Gresham with gunshot wounds to his chest, police said.

That was after three people died in shootings earlier Friday evening.

• In the most recent shooting, around 5:37 a.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in his back in the 300 block of North Cicero Avenue in the Austin neighborhood, according to Chicago Police spokeswoman Officer Stacey Cooper.

The shooter walked up to the man and shot him, then fled, Cooper said. The victim was found by police in the 5000 block of West Quincy Street. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

No one is currently in custody.

• At 4:15 a.m. an 18-year-old man was shot while walking on the sidewalk in the 2200 block of West Touhy Avenue in West Rogers Park. According to police, three other men walked up to him and fired shots, striking the victim in the right thigh. 

The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he is listed in fair condition, Cooper said. No one is currently in custody.

• Minutes earlier in Back of the Yards, around 4:03 a.m., a 40-year-old man was shot in the 5100 block of South Marshfield Avenue, Cooper said. 

The man was walking on the sidewalk when two other men approached him and fired shots, Cooper said. The man was shot in both his legs, and was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.

• A 21-year-old man was shot at 2:18 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Bishop Street in Englewood. According to police, the man was standing in an alley when the shooter drove by in a red sedan drove past him and fired shots.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, Cooper said.

• A 15-year-old boy was shot in his lower back in the Irving Park neighborhood around 1:45 a.m., police said. 

The boy walked to Swedish Covenant Hospital, Cooper said. Police believe he was shot in the 4400 block of North Sacramento Street.

Police said the boy is a documented gang member and is not cooperating with authorities. 

• Around 1:35 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in the 6400 block of South Justine Street in the Englewood neighborhood, Cooper said. The man told police he was standing on the sidewalk when two men walked toward him and fired shots.

The victim walked to St. Bernard Hospital with gunshot wounds to his chest and hand, Cooper said. He was listed in fair condition.

According to police, the man is a documented gang member and no one is currently in custody. 

• At the same time just two miles up the street, two men were shot in the 5300 block of South Justine Street in Back of the Yards, police said.

Both men, 28 and 56, were standing on a front porch around 1:35 a.m. when they heard shots and felt pain, according to Cooper. The 28-year-old man was shot in his abdomen, and the other man, 56, was shot in his right leg and back. 

Both men were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they were listed in fair condition, Cooper said. No one is currently in custody.

• Earlier in the night, two teens were shot in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood while sitting in a parked vehicle, Cooper said.

Around 9:35 p.m. at the intersection of 130th Street and Greenwood Avenue, the two victims were approached by the shooter on foot. The shooter announced a robbery and then fired shots, Cooper said.

One victim, 18, was shot in his right leg, and the other, 17, was grazed by a bullet on his left arm, she said. Both were taken to Christ Advocate Hospital in fair condition.
