WEST LOOP — After 14 years, Avec was due for an upgrade.

One of Chicago's top restaurants, the heralded Mediterranean shared plates eatery, 615 W. Randolph St., will open a second-floor expansion on Sept. 15, creating an events space and bar area where diners can gather during peak hours that will double the seating in its existing location.

As both a pre-meal waiting area and with extra seating, the second floor will offer wine, cocktails and bar snacks at communal tables and bar counter seats.

The addition is meant to cut back on wait times and allow private events. Reception-style events for up to 60 guests can feature the Avec brunch, lunch and dinner menus, as well.

The space, designed by Avec's James Beard award-winning architect Thomas Schlesser and inspired by a Mediterranean wine cave, will feature exposed brick and red oak and, during restaurant service, will seat up to 55 guests.

Avec opened in 2003 from chef Paul Kahan, restaurateur Donnie Madia, wine steward Eduard Seitan and partner Rick DiArmit. Although it began as a wine bar, Avec quickly evolved into one of the top restaurants in Chicago under Chef Perry Hendrix.

Avec is part of the One Off Hospitality Group of eateries and bars, which also include Blackbird, The Violet Hour, The Publican, Big Star and Nico Osteria.
