Memorial Day Weekend Shootings Kill 6 People, Wound 47, Police Say

CHICAGO — Six people were killed and 47 wounded in shootings over Memorial Day Weekend, police said.

Twenty-three of those victims have come since Monday morning, with five dead and 18 wounded.

The fatal shootings include:

• At 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, a 21-year-old man was shot to death while sitting in a car in Washington Park.

• At 9:49 p.m. Monday, a 17-year-old was shot and killed in Englewood. Two others were wounded in the attack.

• At 5:40 p.m., an 18-year-old man was gunned down in Washington Heights.

• At 1:32 p.m., a 52-year-old man was shot to death during an argument in Austin.

• At 10:50 a.m., a 25-year-old woman and 32-year-old man were found shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide in Douglas.

In non-fatal shootings:

• At 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, a 43-year-old man walked into Lutheran General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left hip, police said. The victim told police he got into an altercation with a driver while in traffic in the 6400 block of West Diversey Avenue.

Both men stepped out of their cars, the victim said, and the driver began shooting.

• At 1:27 a.m., a 26-year-old man and 18-year-old woman were shot in Ashburn during an attempted carjacking, police said. The two were sitting inside a car in the 7700 block of South Sawyer Avenue when a man or boy walked up to the car, opened the door and told them to get out.

The 26-year-old man closed the car door and tried to drive away and the thief shot at them, police said. The man was hit in his back and the woman was hit in her leg.

The two were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said.

• At 11:30 p.m. Monday, three people were shot in Grand Crossing, police said. The two were standing on the sidewalk in the 1500 block of East 74th Street when they heard shots and felt pain.

A 19-year-old man was hit in his head, a 20-year-old woman was hit in her right elbow and a 21-year-old man was hit in his left shoulder. They took themselves to Jackson Park Hospital, where the woman and 21-year-old man did not have conditions available but were listed as "stable," police said.

The 19-year-old man was transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

• At 10:55 p.m., three people were shot in Austin, police said. A 30-year-old woman and 36-year-old man were standing on the sidewalk in the 5500 block of West Lake Street when someone in a silver-colored car fired shots at them.

The woman was hit in her chest and the man was hit in his left leg, police said. They were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were in critical condition.

A third victim injured in that same shooting, a 24-year-old woman, walked into Mount Sinai Hospital with a graze wound to her hand and was in good condition, police said.

The man was a documented gang member, a police source said.

• At 9:24 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in Kenwood, police said. The man was walking on the sidewalk in the 5000 block of South Drexel Boulevard when he heard shots and felt pain.

The man was hit in his abdomen and he took himself to University of Chicago Medical Center, police said. He was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

The man was a documented gang member, a police source said.

• At 9:15 p.m., a 45-year-old man was shot in Back of the Yards, police said. The man was in an alley in the 4900 block of South Seeley Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain.

The man was hit in his lower back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was not available but police said he was listed as "stable."

• At 9:10 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in South Shore, police said. The man was walking through an alley in the 7700 block of South East End Avenue when two people walked up to him and tried to rob him.

The man ran away and he was shot in his right elbow. He was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where his condition was not available but police listed him as "stable."

The man was a documented gang member, a police source said.

• At 8:15 p.m., a 30-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in Austin, police said. The man was driving in the 900 block of North Cicero Avenue when someone fired shots at him.

The man's head was grazed by a bullet and he took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.

• At 4:57 p.m., a 24-year-old woman was shot in Woodlawn, police said. The woman was with a group of people in the 6200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when a car pulled up and two people inside the car fired shots at the group.

The woman was hit in her right buttocks and taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition, police said.

• At 2:32 p.m., a 41-year-old man was shot in Canaryville, police said. The man was in the 4300 block of South Parnell Avenue when he was shot in his left arm.

The man took himself to University of Chicago Medical Center and was in good condition, police said.

The man was uncooperative with officers, a police source said, and no further information was immediately available.

• At 1:22 p.m., a 42-year-old man was shot in West Town, police said. The man was in the 1900 block of West Maypole Avenue when he was shot in his leg.

The man took himself to Stroger Hospital and was in good condition, police said.

No further information was immediately available.

No one was in custody in these shootings.

Shootings killed a 15-year-old boy and wounded 10 others Sunday to Monday, 12 people were wounded in shootings Saturday to Sunday and shootings wounded seven people Friday to Saturday.
