Throwback Thursday: Chicago's Longest Block Circa 1909

By Mina Bloom | February 23, 2017 4:13pm

LOGAN SQUARE — For #ThrowbackThursday, check out Chicago's longest block circa 1909.

The old photograph shows Lyndale Street, which was called Johnston Avenue back then, looking east from about California Avenue.

Here's what Logan Square Preservation has to say about the photo:

At this time Lyndale was called Johnston and was referred to in this postcard photograph as the longest block in Chicago, due to the lack of intersecting north-south streets, a condition that still exists today.

Lyndale is also one of the few blocks in the neighborhood that today has zoning in the R4 category, which accounts for the greater than average number of tear-downs on this block, many of which have been replaced in recent years with multi-unit condo buildings.

DNAinfo is partnering with Logan Square Preservation on a "Throwback Thursday" post each week. All photos are the property of Logan Square Preservation unless otherwise indicated.
