LINCOLN SQUARE — Chicago's German-Americans once formed the city's largest ethnic group and the now defunct Germania Club served as a hub for the community's cultural activities.
Prof. Reinhard Andress, director of German Studies at Loyola University Chicago, will talk about the club's history, 2-4 p.m. Saturday at DANK Haus, 4740 N. Western Ave.
Among the curiosities Andress will discuss: The club was founded in 1865 as a male choir, to sing while the body of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln lay in state in Chicago just before his burial in Springfield.
The Germania Club Building, 108 W. Germania Place, was designated a Chicago landmark in 2011 and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
