CHICAGO — Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson briefed the media Monday on the results of a strategic anti-violence mission that spanned across three districts this past weekend.

The CPD coordinated an effort to crack down on criminal activities within the 6th, 10th and 15th districts by creating zones where potential retaliatory violence could occur based upon intelligence and crime data from the past few weeks, Johnson said.

Over a 30-hour period during the weekend, overall visible presence of CPD was increased in the three targeted areas, Johnson said.

Strategic anti-violence missions within these areas included troubled business checks, car stops, traffic enforcement, warrants and custom notifications for individuals of interest, according to Johnson.

"Citywide, we managed to reduce the number of overall shooting incidents by 42 percent compared to last weekend," Johnson said.

Thirty-eight people were shot this past weekend, police said. The previous weekend, 31 people were shot, including eight killed, police said.

The second weekend in November 2015 saw 21 people shot, police said.

Data comparing this past weekend's shooting with the city's overall average was not immediately available.

The weekend effort within the targeted areas resulted in 44 arrests, 16 of which were felony arrests, as well as 12 seized weapons, Johnson said. A suspect in a homicide from this past September was also arrested for first degree murder, Johnson said.

Johnson also said within the three zones, CPD only saw one shooting incident, which was the result of a party that took place indoors and spilled out into the street. That incident also ended in an arrest, Johnson said.

"Even more important than the numbers, however, our combined efforts were meant to send a clear message to criminals in these communities: that their actions will not go without consequence," Johnson said, "And to let the residents know that we're there to help them take their community back."

Johnson said that given the success over the past weekend, CPD plans to continue to do these missions in specific areas of the city.
