LOGAN SQUARE — Neighbors are raising money for a Logan Square man who lost "everything" in an early Saturday fire, including his two dogs and parrot.

Just before 8 a.m. Saturday, emergency officials responded to a fire at a two-story building in the 2600 block of West Homer Street, according to authorities.

The fire was put out, but five people were injured. Two people were taken to Stroger Hospital for burns, two people were taken to St. Mary Hospital for smoke inhalation, and one person was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, officials said.

A man who sells elotes, chicharrones, raspados and other treats from a cart "lost everything" in the fire and suffered from burns, according to family friend Ivette Fino, who set up an online fundraiser with a goal of $500.

As of Monday afternoon, the campaign had far surpassed its goal, raising $1,060.

"He lost everything in the fire. He lost 2 dogs & his parrot. He tried saving his parrot by throwing her out the window but, unfortunately he couldn't get to his dogs," the campaign reads.

The man, who was not identified, also left his money inside the apartment, leaving him with nothing, according to the campaign.

"A year ago he lost his wife its just him now. He is homeless he has no where to go he is only going to be 24hrs in the Hospital."

Fino didn't immediately return a message.

Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) remarked on Facebook Friday afternoon that he was planning on setting up a fundraiser: "I was on the scene this afternoon. Thank God no one was seriously injured. I will be putting a fundraiser together for this incredible 1st Ward family," he wrote.

On Monday morning, Moreno's office said details are forthcoming.
