PILSEN — A drive-by shooting left 20-year-old man dead and an 18-year-old man wounded near the Thalia Hall concert venue early Wednesday morning, officials said.

At 12:49 a.m., the men were standing on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of South Throop Street when someone shot at them from a passing Chevrolet Tahoe, according to a police incident report.

The older man was shot in his back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Armani Fierro, of the 1800 block of South Racine Avenue.

The teen was also shot in his back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

Police said both men are documented gang members.

Alejandro Gonzalez, who said he was a friend of Fierro, said Fierro was not in a gang.

"Just because you're from the neighborhood doesn't mean your in a gang," he said. Fierro was employed and was "a hard-working guy," Gonzalez said.

"He was just a young cat," Gonzalez said.

The shooting marked Chicago's 86th murder of August, making it the city's deadliest month since 1996.

Three blocks away from where the shooting occurred, 26-year-old Victor Alvarado was shot dead on Aug. 6.

No one is in custody, police said.
