EDGEWATER — Come mid-September and a quick hop off the Granville "L" station can yield commuters and residents tacos, margaritas and custom ice cream bars at the first Far North Side Flaco's Tacos joint

Co-owner Ed Hebson said he's in the final stages of securing permits, including a license to serve alcohol, and completing inspections before opening the double storefront taqueria and dessert counter next month.

Picnic tables and string lights are already set up at the ground level of the Granville Red Line, 1116-20 W. Granville Ave.

Flaco's is known for its Mexican cuisine and weekly drink specials, like margaritas and sangria, and in October Hebson said a dessert counter will also open with a new build-your-own-ice-cream-bar setup.

The ice cream bar counter will let customers pick their flavor of ice cream on a stick and choose which chocolate to dip it in before having it topped off with sprinkles.

Other Mexican favorites like paletas, or frozen fruit/ice cream bars, will be available as well.

"Basically we want it to be like a Mexican pop-up dessert shop inside of Flaco's Tacos," Hebson said.

Though originally Hebson said he'd planned to create two separate storefronts, one for the eatery and one as a Mexican-style soft-serve ice cream shop, he said they will now blend into the same design, but still have different ordering counters.

The Flaco's Granville project was approved for its $500,000 renovation in April, and has been rolling since 2014 when the mini-chain signed a 10-year lease with the CTA that included the use of an outdoor patio that takes up part of the sidewalk.

Hebson and his brother Jim own the business, which will be the third location in addition to spots Downtown and in Streeterville. An earlier Wrigleyville location has since closed in anticipation of the move to Edgewater.

Flaco's Tacos on Granville will open softly, followed by a grand opening event later on, Hebson said.
