EDGEWATER — North Siders torn between ice cream and tacos will soon no longer have to choose — Flaco's Tacos under the Granville Red Line is on its way.

On April 22, the city issued permits for a $500,000 renovation of the two storefronts at 1116-20 W. Granville Ave., directly underneath the CTA station.

One of the storefronts will feature hand-scooped ice cream with Mexican flavors such as chile and avocado.

The project was approved in 2014 when the mini-chain signed a 10-year lease with the CTA that included the use of an outdoor patio that takes up part of the sidewalk.

The business is owned by brothers Edmund and Jim Hebson, and will be the third location in addition to spots Downtown and in Streeterville. An earlier Wrigleyville location has since closed in anticipation of the move to Edgewater.

In November 2014, Edmund Hebson said he planned to apply for a liquor license to serve alcoholic drinks like other Flaco's locations do.

Flaco's is known for its Mexican cuisine and weekly drink specials, like margaritas and sangria.

Hebson could not be reached for comment.
