4 Shot Dead, 62 Wounded In Fourth Of July Weekend Violence

CHICAGO — Four people were shot dead and at least 62 others were wounded in violence around Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend — including a 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy shot while playing together.

Shootings on July 4 and into the early hours of July 5 accounted for more than half of the weekend's shootings, as 34 were shot between Monday morning and 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.

Just last year, when many had Friday off for the Independence Day holiday, there were 45 shootings that left 10 people dead and 52 wounded, according to a DNAinfo Chicago analysis. 

Before that, in 2014, there were 57 shootings that left 12 people dead and 55 wounded over the long Independence Day weekend.

Three children were shot Monday, including an 11-year-old boy who initially thought he had been hit by an errant firework. In West Englewood, the 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were playing together when they were shot.

Two people were killed Monday, including a 34-year-old man who was one of three shot in a Humboldt Park attack. A man in his 30s was shot dead in South Shore, according to police.

• Most recently, a man of unknown age and a 30-year-old woman were shot in Austin at 3:05 a.m. Tuesday.

The two were in a car at a stop sign when shots rang out, police said. The woman was struck in her back and was taken to West Suburban Hospital before being transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The man was taken to West Suburban Hospital but refused treatment, police said.

• A 28-year-old man was shot in Austin at 2:55 a.m. Monday, police said.

He was in the 1000 block of North Latrobe Avenue when shots rang out, police said. He was struck in the right leg and was take to West Suburban Hospital, where his condition wasn't released but police considered him to be stable.

• At 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, a 35-year-old man was shot in South Chicago, police said.

He was standing in the street in the 1900 block of East 87th Street when he was shot in right leg, police said. He managed to get himself to Trinity Hospital, where his condition was unknown. The man is a convicted felon, according to police.

• Three people were shot in Humboldt Park at 2:31 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

The group was standing in the street in the 3300 block of West Ohio Street when a gold Chrysler pulled up and someone inside began firing, police said.

A 24-year-old woman was grazed in her back and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. A 36-year-old man was shot in his stomach and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition. A 34-year-old man was shot in the stomach and head and was listed in serious condition at Stroger Hospital, police said.

• A 22-year-old woman was shot in West Englewood at 2:31 a.m. Tuesday police said. 

She was sitting in a parked car in the 6800 block of South Campbell Street when a man in a white T-shirt walked up and fired, police said. She was struck in her head and left shoulder and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

• Fifteen minutes before that, at 2:15 a.m., a 19-year-old man was wounded in a West Garfield Park shooting, police said. 

He was in the 100 block of South Pulaski Road when he was shot in his left leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said. The man was being uncooperative, according to police.

• A 26-year-old woman was shot in West Pullman Tuesday morning, police said.

She was in a home in the 11500 block of South Racine Avenue at 1:35 a.m.when she heard an argument on the street, police said. Shots rang out and the woman was struck in the right leg and grazed in her head, police said. She was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in stable condition.

• A 20-year-old woman was injured in a shooting while walking Downtown Monday morning, police said. 

• A 23-year-old man was shot in Brighton Park early Tuesday, according to police.

He was in the 2600 block of West Pershing Road at 12:40 a.m. when he was struck in his left shoulder and stomach. He was brought to Mount Sinai Hospital in unknown condition and was being uncooperative with police, according to the department.

• A 26-year-old man was critically wounded in a Woodlawn shooting at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

He was walking through an alley in the 6200 block of South Drexel Avenue when he was confronted by three people and one opened fire, police said. He was struck in his head and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

• A 15-year-old boy was shot in Chicago Lawn at midnight Tuesday, according to police.

He was leaving a business in the first block of West 79th Street at 12 a.m. when someone got out of a gun and fired at him, police said. The teen was shot in his left leg and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, police said.

• A South Deering shooting injured a 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man late Monday night, police said. 

Police believe the two were either in a moving car or next to the car as shots rang out in the 10500 block of South Yates Avenue at 11:35 pm. Monday.

The girl was shot in her right shoulder, and the man was grazed in his back, police said. Both were taken to Trinity Hospital, where their condition was not known but police said they were stable.

• A 24-year-old man and a 37-year-old man were shot in Englewood at 9:20 p.m. Monday, police said. 

They were on the sidewalk in the 5700 block of South May Street when someone walked up and began firing, police said. The 24-year-old was shot in the left hand, back and right leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was unknown, police said. The 37-year-old was shot in his right leg and was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital, where his condition was not released but police considered him to be stable.

• At 8:31 p.m., a 29-year-old man was shot in Marquette Park, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman. The man was in a crowd of people in the 7200 block of South Artesian Avenue when several people walked up and fired shots at the crowd.

The man was hit in his leg. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was not released but he was listed as "stable," Quaid said.

The man was a documented gang member, police said, and was uncooperative.

• A 33-year-old man shot in Cottage Grove Heights Monday afternoon.

• A 17-year-old boy was shot in West Englewood at at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

• An Avalon Park shooting wounded a 27-year-old man at 1:15 p.m., police said.

• At 8:50 a.m., a 34-year-old man was shot in Roseland, police said.

He was in the 200 block of West 109th Place when he was shot in his buttocks and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was not known but police considered him stable.

• At 4:10 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in Austin, Quaid said. The man was standing outside at Cortland Street and Mason Avenue when a white SUV drove up and someone inside fired shots and then drove off.

The man was hit in his right shoulder. A friend took him to West Suburban Hospital, where he was in good condition, Quaid said.

Two people had died and 30 others were wounded in shootings between Friday afternoon and early Sunday, according to police.
