CHICAGO — For their next vacation, many Chicagoans are headed to ... Wicker Park?
Of the nearly 250,000 people who used the short-term rental site Airbnb last year for a place in Chicago, about 7 percent of them lived in the Chicago area already, the company says. Most of those people are from the city.
"A lot of people who are using Airbnbs in Chicago are in fact from Chicago itself," said Airbnb spokesman Christopher Nulty.
The Wicker Park and Humboldt Park area topped the list of most popular "staycation" neighborhoods. Logan Square ranked second. Lakeview, Lincoln Park and River North rounded out the top five.
Last year, the number of people using Airbnb in the city increased 105 percent. The increase was even higher on the South Side — 138 percent — where there are few traditional hotels, Nulty said.
