UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — Giving out college scholarships and helping the homeless is what the Calahan Foundation is all about.

The foundation's 7th Annual Celebration of Giving Benefit Gala will be Saturday at the UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road. Tickets can be bought through Ticketmaster.

Attendees will be in for a special treat: Chrisette Michelle and Avery Sunshine will take the stage in separate live performances. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

Proceeds will help the foundation assist college-bound students and distribute hundreds of coats this year to 10 local homeless shelters, said Edward Calahan, who co-founded the foundation with his wife.

"The purpose of this is to give a handout, to give a hand to individuals within our community," he said. "We started this foundation in order to help underprivileged children, as it relates to scholarships, so that they can continue their education and return to the community as productive citizens."

Awards will be given out to those who have done exceptional work in the community. Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis will be one of the individuals recognized Saturday.
