ANDERSONVILLE — After a year of supplying neighbors and weary shoppers along Clark Street with American comfort food, Summerdale has closed in Andersonville.

The restaurant, at 5413 N. Clark St., opened in October last year in the former Marigold Restaurant by a trio of Andersonville restaurateurs — Marty Fosse, co-owner of Anteprima, Ombra and Acre; and the former owners of Marigold, Jim Dragatsis and Sandeed Malhotra. The group announced the closing via Facebook on Nov. 10.

"Thank you to all of our staff and guests over the past year. We are sad that we have closed our doors, but glad we got to meet all of you. See you around the neighborhood!" said the message posted to Facebook.

According to the Edgeville Buzz, which first reported the closing last week, the location has seen a fair share of short-lived eateries, including Ole Ole in 2010, followed by Marigold in 2012 and Bulls Horn Taco Bar, which lasted only a few months in 2013.

A similar note was placed on the restaurant's door from the staff of the restaurant. It read: "Beloved patrons/friends, thank you for making Summerdale special. The staff will never forget the kindness and community we felt here. Thank you, we will see you around the hood!"

Owners of the restaurant were not available for comment.

The comfort-food heavy menu had everything from buffalo wings, Swedish meatballs and fried mushrooms to cob salad, burgers, slow-cooked pork shoulder, chicken pot pies, mac and cheese and more. It also served beer, wine and specialty cocktails.

According to its website, Summerdale was named after 20-acre tract of land, which was acquired by James Clybourn and Robert Greer in 1872.

"Summerdale will be a real neighborhood spot ... the sort of restaurant that everyone wishes they had around the corner," Fosse said when the restaurant opened.
