One Dead, 18 Wounded Since Thursday Morning, Police Say

CHICAGO — Since Thursday morning, shootings around Chicago have left one man dead and another 18 people wounded, police said.

Two people were shot, one fatally, in South Chicago around 11:40 p.m., said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The most recent shooting occurred in the 4300 block of South Wood Street in New City around 4:50 a.m. A 22-year-old man was shot in his chest and neck and was unresponsive on the scene. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in a very critical condition, Pacheco said.

Thirty minutes earlier, a man was shot in Uptown.

Around 2:05 a.m., a man was shot in the 6000 block of South Maplewood Avenue in Chicago Lawn. Police heard shots in the area and found a 21-year-old man was shot in his chest and groin on the sidewalk. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Pacheco said.

• Two people were shot in the 10700 block of South Wentworth Avenue in Roseland around 1:40 p.m. A 20-year-old man was shot in his leg and a 45-year-old man was also shot in his leg. Both men were taken to Roseland Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, Pacheco said.

• Around 1:40 p.m., two men were shot while walking in the 9800 block of South Morgan Street in Washington Heights. A 20-year-old man was shot in his arm and wrist. Another man in his 20s was shot in his face and leg. Both men were taken to Christ Hospital, but their condition was not known, Pacheco said.

• Around 11:30 p.m., a 49-year-old man was shot in Grand Crossing.

• Around the same time, a 23-year-old man was shot in his hand when a man walked up to him and opened fire in the 6400 block of South Whipple Street in Chicago Lawn. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Pacheco said.

Two people were shot in Englewood around 11:05 p.m.

• Around 6:30 p.m., a 37-year-old man was shot in Rogers Park.

• An 18-year-old woman was shot in Little Village around 6:10 p.m.

• Around 4:35 p.m., a man was shot in his abdomen after getting into an argument with another man in the 200 block of West 87th Street in Chatham. He was taken to Christ in serious condition. The shooter was seen driving from the scene in a black van, Pacheco said.

• Two people were shot in the 5900 block of South Maplewood Avenue in Chicago Lawn when a man ran through the alley firing shots around 2:30 p.m. A 20-year-old man was shot in his leg and drove himself to Holy Cross, where his condition was stabilized. A 14-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet and refused treatment, Pacheco said.

• Around 12:50 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in his right arm while in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue in South Deering when someone opened fire from a black SUV. Further details were not available.
