UPTOWN — Rather than spending your weekend streaming Netflix — let's face it, you were considering it — go buy some fresh flowers or admire some art.
We've rounded up some fun things to do this weekend. Best part is: You don't have to leave the North Side to do any or all of them.
See a variety show at the Green Mill
This Sunday the acclaimed variety show Paper Machete will feature Kurt Chiang, Brendan Dowling and Tim Sniffen, Mel Evans, Dan Friesen, Steve Waltien and Chad the Bird.
Diana and the Dishes will perform and Jamie Bird will provide the cabaret tunes. The show kicks off at 3 p.m. at the iconic bar at 4802 N. Broadway. Plus, it's free, so it costs the same amount as streaming Netflix. (Less if you count the subscription fee.)
Get design tips in Andersonville
Clark Street in Andersonville is quickly becoming a destination for home goods, furniture and all things interior design. Shops that sell home goods and offer design services continue to sprout up like Norcross and Scott Home, which opened this month, and 5140 Shop by Bret L Taylor, which opened in December. They've joined what was already considered a bustling design district with antique furniture stores galore.
See a cabaret or burlesque show at Uptown Underground
In addition to a weekly magic lounge, the retro venue, 4707 N. Broadway, hosts cabaret and burlesque shows every weekend. Saturday's shows include Kiss Kiss Cabaret, a recurring show produced by the founders of the venue, SpeakUnEasy!, Tiny Hat Time and RedRum and Sanjula. For more information, and to buy tickets, visit Uptown Underground's website.
Admire art at Uptown Arts Center
There are only a few days left to see Margaret Buchen's exhibit "Still Pictures: Closeups" at the Uptown Arts Center, which is located on the fourth floor of the Preston Bradley Center, 941 W. Lawrence Ave. Her paintings will be taken down Sunday, according to the center's website.
Brighten your weekend with fresh flowers
Before Uptown flower shop Forget Me Knodt, 1313 W. Wilson Ave., closes at the end of April, pop in and buy a bouquet for a special someone. If nothing else, they'll look pretty on your dining room table the whole week and remind you that spring is coming despite the less-than-ideal temps.
