UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — A group of University Village neighbors leading an effort to clean up area viaducts is inviting others to join in the cause.

The Pilsen Cares group plans to meet at noon Saturday at the Ugly Step Sister Gallery, 1750 S. Union Ave., in Pilsen. University Commons resident Michelle Fennessy, who launched a petition calling on the city to commit to cleaning the viaducts monthly, said anyone who was interested was  invited to participate.

Stephanie Lulay says that neighbors are doing most of the work, but want the city to help:

The group also wants the city develop a long-term plan to deal with chipping paint, water leaks, pigeon droppings and dim lighting in the turn-of-the-century viaducts, said Fennessy, who lives near the viaduct at 16th Street and Racine Avenue.

At the meeting, residents will discuss strategies to influence city politicians, organize future cleanup efforts and fundraisers to raise money for more "sanitation kits" — kits that contain garbage bags and latex gloves in garbage cans the group has affixed to city viaducts.

"We are combining resources, expertise, ideas," Fennessy said. The meetings will be ongoing.
