EDGEWATER — A new gym, Edgewater Fitness Center, is set to open on Bryn Mawr Avenue this winter.

Owner and "avid weightlifter" Jim Kroeger, 49, said he opened his first gym in the early '90s in Lincoln Park. Then about three years ago opened another location near the Montrose Brown Line station.

"The club is growing steadily over there so much, so we thought we could replicate the concept in another underserved neighborhood," he said.

He said he hopes to open the Edgewater location sometime before Christmas.

"We had been really, really happy how the community here has embraced us," said Ravenswood Fitness general manager John Ferrick. "And we like the idea of finding another place to do this in Chicago."

The Edgewater gym will utilize about 4,000 square feet in a storefront at 1106 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., which was formerly home to the Edgewater Development Corp.

Ferrick said ideally the small gym would attract customers who live within a six or seven blocks.

"We’re very, very low-key," he said. "We’re not a meat market gym."

Edgewater Fitness plans to offer equipment, like elliptical machines, stationary bikes and treadmills, and 25 exercise classes a week, including yoga, kickboxing and Zumba.
