UPTOWN — At a CAPS meeting for Beat 1913 Tuesday night, officers discussed problem spots for gang loitering in the area and announced a five-percent decrease in major crime for the month of August.

Officers identified two apartment buildings on North Malden Avenue as problem spots for gang loitering in Beat 1913, which is bordered by Montrose Avenue on the south, Lawrence Avenue on the north, Broadway on the east and Clark Street on the west. One of those buildings, at 4520-4528 N. Malden, received 53 calls for service in the last month that led to two arrests, police said.

Police have been talking to property managers of the two buildings about identifying problem tenants, beefing up security and adding cameras around the place, police said.

During the meeting at Truman College, at 1145 W. Wilson Ave., officers also said total crime was down about 40 percent this month in the beat with no homicides, no criminal sexual assaults, two robberies, one aggravated assault, three burglaries and 11 thefts in the last 30 days, police said.

Officers also warned residents to be aware of their surroundings after a pattern of robberies last month where victims were attacked from behind.

Here's the crimes committed most on this beat last month:

Simple Battery: 5

Retail Theft: 5

Criminal Damage to Vehicle: 5

Domestic Battery: 3

Simple Assault: 3

Theft From Building: 3

Motor Vehicle Theft: 3

Cannabis 30 grams or less: 3
