Without Overpasses, Some Businesses Note It's Brighter in Uptown

UPTOWN — Over the weekend construction crews removed part of a concrete overpass near the Wilson Red Line stop as part of the renovation project.

Now, the sun is shining where it hasn't for nearly a century. And a couple local businesses are already starting to see a difference.

"It's really noticeable," said Maria Barnes, owner of Uptown Bikes, 4653 N. Broadway, referring to the interaction at Leland Avenue and Broadway outside her shop. "It's a different landscape now. I think it'll promote a better street environment."

Jeff Naranjo, manager of Ace Hardware, said now his shop is "more visible." The Uptown shop at 4654 N. Broadway has had to deal with the shadowy intersection for the roughly 50 years it's been in business.

Here are before-and-after shots of the intersection:

This week crews are at work removing another concrete overpass: the one at Wilson Avenue between Broadway and Clifton Avenue.

Construction started Monday and will last through Friday. During which, Wilson Avenue will be closed to all traffic. The #78 CTA bus will be rerouted and will not stop at Wilson. However, one sidewalk will remain open, as will the Wilson Red Line station entrance and the Truman College service drive.

There will be dust and noise, the CTA warned.
