Man Shoots Himself in Knee While Cleaning Gun, Police Say

CHICAGO — At least eight people have been shot since Monday morning.

Most recently, a man shot himself while cleaning his gun early Tuesday in the West Elsdon neighborhood, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

Around 2:10 a.m., the man, whose age was unavailable, was in the 5800 block of South Springfield Avenue when he shot himself in the knee, police said.

He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in fair condition, Sedevic said.

Around 3:25 p.m. Monday, a 28-year-old man was shot by someone in a white van as he walked in the 1700 block of West 61st Street in Englewood, Sedevic said.

The man, who was shot in the hip and leg, drove himself to Holy Cross Hospital in fair condition, Sedevic said.

On Monday afternoon, four people were injured in separate shootings in North Lawndale, Pullman and Bronzeville. Around 9:20 a.m., two men were taken into custody after shooting two men in West Pullman.
