WRIGLEYVILLE — When Cubs players stroll to the plate at Wrigley Field this year, they’re getting serenaded with their favorite song. They tried it a bit in 2010, but this is the first year they're fully committed.

The Cubs are a little late to the walk-up song tradition — which was started in the '70s at Old Comiskey Park by retired organist Nancy Faust — that’s long been a staple at most big league ballparks.

Faust has said she started out by learning where players grew up and played their state songs as they walked to the plate or took the mound. Over the years, Faust cheered and jeered players with bits of songs between pitches. When a rookie took to the plate, for instance, Faust sometimes played “Who are you?” by The Who.

And in the late '90s, the San Diego Padres started playing classic rock tunes when their closer took the field. Since then, it seems every player has his own inspirational song — or three — as an introduction.

Now that the pre at-bat musical interlude that aims to pump up players and fans has been introduced at Wrigley, it seems to be already paying dividends, Cubs spokesman Julian Green said.

Take Cubs right fielder Jorge Soler, for instance, who played the opening home stand against St. Louis without suggesting a favorite at-plate interlude.

When the Cubs came back to town April 14, Soler told the team to play “Gracias” by El Micha for his walk-up song. That night, the Cuban slugger hit two homers.

So far, the song selection for the Cubs lineup — a mix of heavy metal, country, alternative rock, Latin tunes, hip-hop and rap — makes an interesting playlist.

Check out a Spotify playlist of the Cubs' walkup songs.
