CHICAGO — Just when you thought it was safe to move your snow brush to the back seat, Mother Nature dropped another blanket of snow on the city just in time to add to your case of the Mondays.

But hey, you should've expected it. Right?

By noon, the majority of the snow had fallen, said Mike Bardou, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

There are a few areas where light snow continues to fall but that should dry up by 2 or 3 p.m., Bardou said.

"It's really not that unusual," said Kevin Birk, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "We typically can get heavy wet snowfall into late March or early April."

The latest snowfall on record? On May 3, 1907, when 1.3 inches accumulated across Chicago, Birk said.

Early reports said at least an inch of snow accumulated so far Sunday night into Monday.

Still, after Chicago basked in 70-degree temperatures a week ago, waking up to white was jarring.

And on the roads, the snow wreaked havoc. Travel times of more than a hour and a half registered on the Kennedy Expy., and icy ramps leading from the Stevenson to the Dan Ryan slowed traffic to a halt.

Early reports said at least an inch of snow accumulated Sunday night into Monday. The snowfall should continue into the early afternoon, but "should start tapering off around 10 a.m.," Birk said.

There is a slight chance of rain or snow around 3 p.m. and the total daytime accumulation of snow is expected to be between 1 and 3 inches. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s to low 40s Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Tuesday we'll see similar temperatures in the low 40s with a possible thunderstorm Tuesday night.

The weather will be "up and down" all week, with temperatures rising a little Wednesday and landing in the 50s. Wednesday will be warm but breezy, Birk said.

From Thursday night into Friday, there is a slight chance of snow. And after several days of cold, we can expect the weather to return to the 50s around Sunday, Birk said.
