LAKEVIEW — Shoppers at the Whole Foods in Lakeview on Monday welcomed the possibility that the "cramped" store could be moving to a new location.

Crain's reported Monday that the grocer plans to move from 3300 N. Ashland Ave. to 3201 N. Ashland. The new location on the corner of Belmont and Ashland avenues would cover more than 70,000 square feet, an increase from the 50,100 square feet at its current space.

Officials with Whole Foods did not respond to requests for comment and workers at the store said while they had heard talk that the store could move, they had not been given confirmation.

But that didn't stop shoppers from raving about the potential plan.

"It would be fabulous," said customer Megan Roberts, 35. "Parking is sometimes an issue, and the aisles are bit narrow and crowded. If they moved into a bigger location, it would be a much better shopping experience."

Agreed Robin Karlov, 50, of North Center: "Bring it on. This store is pretty small, and parking isn't that great. I'd welcome a new, bigger location."

"Love it," said Ryan Wells, 32, of Lakeview. "A larger Whole food would expand the variety, give more options to shoppers. I sometimes go to the one on Kingsbury [in Lincoln Park] and it feels like a palace. This is one is kind of cramped."

Daniel Aaronson, 35, of Lakeview  was excited about the expansion. "I occasionally go to the Lincoln Park Whole Foods, and when I leave I'm always a bit jealous. They're aisles are wider, they have twice the selection. This [location] could stand to be improved."

Target had planned to open at the location, a former bank building, but those plans fell through and the company moved to sell the property in the spring.
