CHICAGO — A boy and a girl, both 15, were shot on the sidewalk next to a bus stop on the Near West Side Tuesday morning.

Around 9:55 a.m., someone shot the teens in the 2400 block of West Jackson Boulevard, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman.

The boy sustained a gunshot wound in his chest, and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, while the girl sustained a gunshot wound in her leg and was listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital, Estrada said.

The shooter then ran off, Estrada said.

Marvell Gladney, 45, was picking up trash in the alley across the street from the bus stop when he said he heard about five shots.

"I didn't know which way to run," said Gladney, who does maintenance for Eastlake Management. "It makes you real nervous 'cause you don't know where the bullets are flying."

Gladney said he saw the gunman outside of the bus, but he didn't hear the victims or bus riders screaming. He said the girl who was shot looked "much older" than 15, assuming that she must've been at least 18.

Though he lives at 79th Street and Lafayette Street in West Chatham, he's worked on the Near West Side for three years. Most victims of gun violence Gladney hears about are young kids, he said.

The incident happened on the sidewalk near the No. 126 westbound CTA bus stop at Western Avenue and Jackson Avenue, not on the bus, according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hoskinski, citing preliminary information.

During the investigation, the No. 126 CTA bus was rerouted in both directions, Hoskinski said, but normal service was restored at 11:33 a.m.

No one is in custody for the shooting, and detectives are investigating.

On Saturday morning, a 9-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet about a block away on the 2300 block of West Adams Street.

The boy was walking with his father when someone opened fire at a black four-door sedan, police said. Police said the boy was not the intended target of the shooting.
