Chicago Violence Leaves Two Dead, At Least 12 Wounded Since Late Friday

CHICAGO — At least 12 people were injured and two were killed in separate shootings across the city since Friday night.

In the latest incident, about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 10500 block of South Wentworth Avenue, police said. He took himself to Provident Hospital, where he was in good condition. No more information was available.

Earlier, a 23-year-old man was shot in the buttocks while in the 2300 block of South St. Louis Avenue about 2:40 p.m., police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition had stabilized. Authorities said the victim is a documented gang member.

Earlier Saturday morning, a 22-year-old man walked into St. Anthony Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back, police said. He was wounded in the 2400 block of South Washtenaw Avenue about 7 a.m.

No one is in custody and Area Central detectives are investigating.

The most recent fatal shooting happened around 3 a.m. when four men were shot in West Garfield Park, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old man. The others survived, but two of them are in critical condition.

Another 20-year-old man was shot and killed in South Deering Friday night.

• Around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man was shot in Park Manor, police said.

The man was in the 7400 block of South Champlain Avenue when someone shot him in his neck, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. 

He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he is in "critical but stable" condition, Estrada said.

No one is in custody.

• About an hour earlier, two men, both 24, were shot in the 800 block of West Jackson Boulevard on the Near West Side, Estrada said.

Both men were shot in their legs, Estrada said. One of them was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the other was taken to Stroger Hospital.

Police said the men are documented gang members. 

No other information was immediately available.

• Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, a 34-year-old man was shot in Uptown.

He was in an alley in the 4400 block of North Clifton Avenue when two men walked up and one of them opened fire, striking him in his hand, upper leg and shoulder, Estrada said.

He is in good condition after being transported to St. Francis Hospital, Estrada said.

Police said the victim is a documented gang member so the incident may have been gang related.

• About 20 minutes earlier, an 18-year-old man was standing on the corner in the 1700 block of North McVicker Avenue in Galewood when he heard shots and felt pain, Estrada said.

An acquaintance drove him to South Suburban Hospital with a graze wound in his lower left leg, Estrada said; the man's condition had stabilized.

• Around 9:50 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot on the Lower West Side. 

He was sitting in a parked car in the 2100 block of South Paulina Street when a dark SUV pulled up and someone inside opened fire, Estrada said.

He suffered a graze wound to his leg, and drove himself to Stroger Hospital where he is in good condition, Estrada said.

Authorities said the victim is a documented gang member. 

No one is in custody.
