LAKEVIEW — Mark Thomas has suspended his run for alderman in the 44th Ward — but said he could come back if no one else runs against Ald. Tom Tunney (44th).

Thomas, an entrepreneur who owns The Alley, Taboo Tabou and other businesses at the corner of Clark and Belmont, made the announcement Friday in an email to supporters.

"Thomas underwent fusion surgery in his neck three months ago," the email said. "Because of minor complications, Mark Thomas is physically restrained and will need to undergo future procedures."

Thomas wrote he hoped that by suspending his campaign several months before the February 2015 election, he'd provide enough time for another progressive candidate to challenge Tunney.

"However, if no one is willing to stand up to Tunney, [Thomas] will reinstate his campaign and fight, even in a wheelchair."

Thomas announced his candidacy in September and launched a website where locals could voice their opinion on 44th ward issues.
