JEFFERSON PARK — Police mistakenly reported that a gang-related shooting took place in Jefferson Park because of a clerical error on a night when nearly a dozen people were shot, a Chicago police spokesman said.

Two people were wounded in a shooting around 3 a.m. July 9 near Lamon and North avenues, not near Lamon and Ainslie avenues, as police officials originally told media outlets, including DNAinfo Chicago.

Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman, apologized for the error, which he said occured when the shooting was entered into the department's database. It was discovered by Officer George Hemesath, who is assigned to the Jefferson Park Police District.

A man was shot in the leg and a woman was shot multiple times by someone who shouted gang slogans before opening fire while they were in a car traveling west on North Avenue. Both were taken to area hospitals and listed in stable condition.

Three people were killed and eight people were wounded July 9 in shootings across the city. That could have contributed to the error, Estrada said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, Estrada said.

Gang-related shootings are rare in the Jefferson Park Police District — it is the safest in the city, authorities said.
