CHICAGO — A Lakeview man was charged with drunken driving after authorities said he drove the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive, killing a 26-year-old law school student.

Erik Johnson, 23, of the 3500 block of North Janssen Avenue, is charged with reckless homicide, felony aggravated DUI resulting in accidental death, two felony counts of aggravated DUI resulting in accidental bodily harm, misdemeanor DUI and improper use of a controlled-access highway.

Police said Johnson drove a 2014 Subaru SUV southbound in the northbound Lake Shore Drive lanes about 1:50 a.m. Friday.

Johnson struck a taxi head on near the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive, police said, killing passenger Laura Anne LaPlante, a 26-year-old University of Chicago law school student. The New Hampshire native was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 6:33 p.m. Friday.

The taxi's driver, a 38-year-old man, was seriously hurt, as was a 24-year-old male passenger, who was a classmate of LaPlante's.

Johnson is expected to appear in bond court Sunday.
