BOYSTOWN — A new 5K debuting during Pride Week this summer might involve a little exercise, but don't think that means the week's party vibe will stop.

The Pride 5K will be on the lakefront on the Thursday evening before the Pride Parade in June, and organizer StarEvents hopes the nighttime run has more of a "party atmosphere" than that of a morning jog, said StarEvents CEO John Barry.

"Races are typically on Saturday or Sunday mornings on the lakefront. Those are geared toward someone who wants to get up at 5 or 6 in the morning, park, run a race and get timed," Barry said. "This race is definitely more for an evening crowd that doesn't necessarily do this stuff much."

The race will kick off at 7:30 p.m. June 26 at Fullerton Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, with a post-race party near Diversey Harbor.

A runner's $50 registration fee includes the party, two drink tickets, a grab bag of gifts, and T-shirts designed by local designer Borris Powell.

The gifts are intended to add to the party vibe too, Barry said. The bag will include a set of beads that can be worn at the parade on Sunday, and the T-shirt won't be a typical race T-shirt with just logos and sponsors.

Powell has agreed to make the design a bit more artsy, Barry said.

"It's more about fun," he said.

The run will benefit Center on Halsted's new senior living facility, which is set to open this fall. Interested runners can register online.
