CHICAGO — Three people were in serious condition Saturday after a four-vehicle crash Friday night that was sparked by a car heading south in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive, according to authorities.

The car, a 2008 Toyota Corolla driven by a 43-year-old woman, headed south in the northbound lanes starting at West Waveland Avenue in Lakeview just before midnight, police said.

The vehicle proceeded to strike three northbound vehicles, two of which were struck head on by the wrong-way driver, according to the fire department.

The Corolla struck a 2002 Volkswagon Jetta, driven by a 22-year-old woman. The caused a chain reaction that damaged a a 2013 Jetta, driven by a 46-year-old man, and a 1997 Ford Contour. As the Contour attempted to avoid the accident, it hit the 2002 Jetta, police said.

In all three people, including the driver of the wayward Corolla, were taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, fire department spokesman Larry Langford said.

Three others involved refused treatment at the scene, Langford said.

Police are investigating.
