The long-smoldering fire in a South Chicago warehouse was caused by an arc welder igniting insulation.

Firefighters had to lift the man out of the garbage chute Monday afternoon at 171 W. Oak St. 

The charity hockey game will take the ice at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 at the new rink in Morgan Park.

No one was injured or inside the building at the time of the fire.

Capt. Herbert "Herbie" Johnson of Morgan Park died Nov. 2, 2012 while battling a fire in Gage Park.

The building had no working smoke detectors and "illegal electrical," according to fire officials.

Hundreds gather at the funeral of Capuano, of Mt. Greenwood, who left behind a wife and three children. 

Visitation was held Thursday night for the Chicago firefighter who died while on duty Monday.

Like Dan Capuano, Craig McShane also died after falling into an open elevator shaft on Sept. 22, 1981.

"You don't think they make people like Dan Capuano anymore," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The city is seeking an emergency court order to tear down the building where Dan Capuano died Monday.

A moment of silence was held before the puck dropped Tuesday night for the late firefighter.

Retired fireman Thomas Raycheck died cold and alone, leading to an effort to memorialize him properly.

Proceeds from the commemorative can campaign will provide financial assistance to widows and orphans.

The lumber yard at 6220 N. Northwest Highway is still on fire after the flames rekindled around 7 a.m.
