CHICAGO — The Amundsen High School community is mourning the loss of 16-year-old student Eshunte Mayfield, who was killed Sunday in an accidental shooting.

Members of Chicago Public Schools Crisis Management Unit were on hand at the school Monday to provide grief counseling and support to students, faculty and staff.

"She was sweet and vibrant, she was well liked. She was somebody who was trying to do her best," said Principal Anna Pavichevich, who added that Mayfield was a cheerleader at the high school.

Details are still scarce surrounding the shooting, Pavichevich said.

The teen, who lived in Uptown, was killed in Woodlawn Sunday evening when an acquaintance handling a gun accidentally shot her in the eye, according to police.

At 6:57 p.m. Sunday, the teen was in a home in the 6600 block of South Marquette Road when a gun went off and shot her in the eye, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have arrested someone and charges are pending.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Mayfield lived in the 1200 block of West Lawrence Avenue in Uptown.
