NORTH CENTER — It's nearly impossible in 2017 to picture bustling North Side neighborhoods as the rural outposts they once were.

This image, unearthed from the Chicago Public Library's digital archive, offers a glimpse into North Center's past, capturing a time when Addison Street could be mistaken for Vermont and traffic was of the four-legged, not four-wheeled, variety.

The undated photo is part of the library's Ravenswood-Lake View Community Collection. According to the caption accompanying the picture, it was taken at 1854 W. Addison St., at the Turner homestead.

Highlights from the collection will be on display, 1-4 p.m. Oct. 7, during an open house at Sulzer Library, 4455 N. Lincoln Ave.

Here's a recent Google Streetview snapshot of the same area today.
