WICKER PARK — Burton, a Vermont-based maker of snowboards started by "a godfather" of the sport, will relocate its flagship Chicago store from the Gold Coast to Wicker Park this fall, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

Burton will take over the former American Apparel at 1563 N. Milwaukee Ave., which opened in 2004 and closed in April as part of a massive bankruptcy that shuttered all American Apparel stores.

Along with snowboards, Burton sells bindings, boots, jackets, apparel and accessories such as watches and hats. The company was founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter, who snowboard superstar Shaun White has called "like the cool dad of the sport."

Burton closed its flagship store at 56 E. Walton St. in the Gold Coast in June. That store, in a four-story vintage grey stone townhome, opened in 2007.

On Instagram in May, Burton announced to fans that it was moving to Wicker Park but did not confirm the address until Tuesday.

A Burton representative confirmed Burton's Wicker Park entry, adding it was scheduled to open "sometime in October."

"[The Wicker Park] store will be replacing the flagship store," the worker said.
