IRVING PARK — Traffic shut down in Irving Park early Tuesday evening as authorities investigated a suspicious package on a CTA bus.

Around 4:25 p.m., officers were called to Kimball and Elston avenues for an "unattended backpack" on a CTA bus, according to police.

According to reports, a man threw the backpack aboard as the doors were closing. The bus was evacuated and authorities were called.

The investigation prompted street closures and bus service interruption.

Just after 5 p.m., police declared the scene safe and the package "cleared."

As of 7 p.m., the Kimball-Homan buses were still being temporarily rerouted in both directions.
