First Step Youth Foundation Hosts Tribute Game To Honor Two Teens

 First Step Youth Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicating to assisting with the physical, psychological, educational and social development of young athletes. The organization was formed in 2001 by friends Corey Harper and John Batson.

CHICAGO — The First Step Youth Foundation is hosting a tribute game Saturday to honor players Michael Haynes and Dequarrius Cannon who lost their lives due to gun violence. 

The event will take place at Crane High School, 2245 West Jackson Boulevard. The opening events consist of a First Step Youth Game at 4 p.m., a Youth Charity 3-point shootout at 5 p.m., a First Step Alumni game at 5:30 p.m., and then an Alumni 3-point shootout at 6 p.m. 

The main event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a game of Team Big Mike vs. Team DQ. Admission for the event is $5 and the money will go towards helping underprivileged students on the team. 

The First Step Youth Foundation focuses on basketball training for young athletes but also provides mentorship support with academic and life skills. Alumni of the program have gone on to play for the NBA like Anthony Davis and Jabari Parker. Players have also gone on to attend Magnet schools in Chicago and pursue careers in medicine, law, and business, according to the website
