BACK OF THE YARDS — Chicago police are asking Back of the Yards residents and community leaders to rally Monday night in an effort to root out violence in the area.

Deering police district officials and community leaders will gather at 7 p.m. at 4309 S. Ashland Ave., the Police Department announced Sunday.

Joining police and community leaders will be clergy, block clubs, youth groups and parent patrols. Community members are invited to attend.

The "Operation Wake-Up" community rally is being held three days after a Deering district officer was shot by a robbery suspect on the same block where the rally will be held. The officer, a woman, was struck in the leg and was in good condition Friday, police said.

In May, two officers were shot on the same block of Ashland Avenue.

Beyond the attacks on officers, gang conflicts, sometimes involving assault rifles, are terrorizing neighbors.

On Wednesday, an 18-year-old woman was seriously wounded in a road rage incident down the street that ended in gunshots.
