CHICAGO — The potential dangers of riding a bike in the city are illustrated in a video of a bicyclist hit by a car and severely injured Tuesday in University Village. The horrific accident was captured on another driver's dashcam video.

The video shows a bicyclist apparently slowly pedaling into the intersection of Halsted and Roosevelt when a car hits him, sending the man over the car's roof and landing several feet away.

The car stops and onlookers gather. Emergency responders arrive several minutes later and the video ends.

Police say the incident happened at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of West Roosevelt Road. The bicyclist, a 32-year-old man, ran a red light and was hit by a car, police said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman, stayed at the scene and has not been cited in the crash, police said.

Six bicyclists were killed in crashes in the city last year, and seven died in 2015. The city wants to eliminate pedestrian deaths and injuries through its Vision Zero campaign.

The campaign is focused on making streets safer, changing people's behavior to "build a culture of safety" and implementing policies and training that can make cars and drivers safer, according to a city news release.
