TBT: Home Of Bank Founder Known For Embezzling, Then Committing Suicide

By Mina Bloom | June 29, 2017 5:47am

LOGAN SQUARE — For #TBT, check out the home of Fred Popp, the founder of Logan Square State & Savings Bank who was found dead in his car after an embezzlement scheme.

The old photo, taken in 1908, shows Popp's first home, the first building on the right at Central Park and Wrightwood avenues.

Popp founded Logan Square State & Savings Bank, a building that still stands today. In fact, the owners of Double Door have been eyeing it as a potential new home.

Here's what Logan Square Preservation has to say about the photo:

Looking north along Central Park from Wrightwood, circa 1908. The first building on the right that is just visible was the first residence of Fred Popp, the postal worker who famously rose to be founder and president of the Logan Square State & Savings Bank before taking his own life in 1924 as an embezzlement scheme unraveled.

For more on the rise and fall of Popp, check out and old Tribune article from 1923.
