WEST LOOP — In response to President Donald Trump's "nasty woman" rhetoric, a group of Chicago artists will host an art exhibit to support Planned Parenthood Friday.

The Nasty Women Art Chicago exhibit and fundraiser will feature more than 350 works of art from 5:30-10:30 p.m. Friday at Moonlight Studios, 1446 W. Kinzie St. in the West Loop. The movement aims to capitalize on the "nasty woman" insult Trump hurled at Hillary Clinton during a presidential debate last fall.

Artists ages 9 to 94 contributed artwork to the exhibit, and the fundraiser will showcase art from women across Chicago and around the world, said Susan Messer McBride, chair of Nasty Women Art Chicago. Contributions came from 18 states in the U.S. and Spain, Belgium, Austria and India.

“We are thrilled by the response we got from women in the arts community,” McBride said. “The power of art as protest is loud and clear.”

The free event will also feature performances from local singer-songwriter Shannon Patino, Nashville spoken word artist Nina Donovan, Chicago spoken word artist Dianna Tyler and Red Rover Series will present a poetry reading. Additional entertainment will also include sets by DJs Diskokitty, DJ Lady D and Hiroko.

All proceeds from art sold at the fundraiser will benefit Planned Parenthood Illinois.

“We believe in ‘Your Art. Your Voice. Your Choice,’” McBride said. “Our goal is that people from all over Chicago will chose to come by to hear and see the voices of our artists and take home their artwork.”

Chicago's Nasty Women exhibition is part of a global movement among artists who aim to actively resist Trump's policies and support women's rights. Nearly 50 Nasty Women art exhibitions have been held across the U.S. and around the world to date.

We are blown away by all of the submissions & are excited to include artwork from all over the world! This piece by @barbarabervoets traveled across the Atlantic Ocean all the way from Belgium to be a part of our event & fundraiser! 🌍 ⚫⚫⚫ “Using explicit femininity, going from tenderness to irony, my art is an act of resistance against a world full of violence, exclusion and ignorance. I stand for a society without discrimination and hate, with gender and ethnic equality. We have to work towards a more tolerant society. WOMENPOWER can inspire others and works as a catalyst for change.” ⚫⚫⚫ Add this international artwork to your collection on May 5th at Moonlight Studios! More info at ⚫nastywomenartchicago.org⚫
