WEST LOOP — A former teen tennis star will open the West Loop's first boutique cycling studio in the neighborhood this month.

West Loop resident Anna Chipchase and husband Nick Munroe will open Cycle X at 1208 W. Madison St. on May 13. At the new fitness studio, high-tech visual effects will be integrated into each 45-minute calorie-torching, high-intensity ride.

A native of Great Britain, Chipchase was an internationally ranked tennis star by the age of 10 and played for her college team in the United States. She'd dabbled in other fitness routines, but when it came time to lose weight for her wedding, she turned to cycling.

"I loved cycling. I had a back injury, and it was something that was compatible for that," said Chipchase, who was trekking up to Lincoln Park for classes. "I thought, 'We need this is the West Loop.'"

During the 45-minute ride at Cycle X, clients can pedal to the beat of choreographed rhythm or enjoy some friendly competition with performance metrics that measure speed and power. The sensory indoor cycling theater was designed by illumination experts, Chipchase said, and the visual effects integrated into classes include an early morning sunrise, a Tabata ride with flame effects and holiday-themed scenes.

To complement the cycling sessions, Cycle X also will offer on-demand TRX strength training, a form of resistance-based exercise, on a virtual wall. The cycling studio also has showers and a block blow-dry bar.

Chipchase said the "invigorating" workout is appropriate for people of all fitness levels.

"I love that no matter how fit or unfit you are, it works for you," she said. "Everyone has the same mindset and is cheering each other on."

Until the studio opens, Cycle X is offering single classes at $20, a six-class block for $100, a 12-class block for $200 and a $99 unlimited monthly membership. During the studio's opening week, Cycle X will offer free classes for the neighborhood.

After opening, a single class will be $25, and an unlimited monthly membership will be $215.

Cycling shoes, keyless lockers, filtered water and towels are included in the price of each class. Complimentary foam rollers and yoga mats are also available for stretching before and after the ride.

Chipchase said the studio will offer charity rides to support local nonprofits and private group rides for brides, birthdays and team building.

"Cycle X is a family working towards the same goal — to help each other achieve success in a fun, upbeat environment where all are ages and fitness levels are welcome,” she said.
